i run fedora 19 on a dual boot machine with windows 7.
for the last few day, i was getting the 'low disk space on filesystem' error message. i was planning to move some files from my home directory, but this problem stops me from doing that.
it is, after every few minutes of use, the display goes completely black. sometimes it work for hours without any issue, sometimes (mostly) just after 10-15 minutes of using the pc. so although the hardware keep running, the computer doesn't respond.
at first i though it was an issue with the graphics card, but when i log in to windows, it never occurs.
what can be the possible cause for this issue? how can i solve it?
i'm not an expert with linux/fedora, so if u have a solution, u may need to keep that in mind.
Fedora 19 is PAST !!! it's "End Of Life!!!"
it has not been supported since January 6
and never will be updated
for all practical purpose is is dead
please install Fedora 21 ASAP

there is still 5% of the drive left ( default for this)
text boot into the root account
and using the terminal
move the files

that is a different issue
i am betting your NVIDIA ( a guess) 3d card's FAN is not working
that will do this
--- you DO have a nvidia card ?????
or is is a AMD or intel "chip"
depending on the hardware the DEFAULT nvidia "Nouveau" driver might not support the hardware
gforce 5 ( from 2004 and older) and older cards are not fully supported
and the Nouveau driver will not work on a lot of new laptops
i know f19 is old, but i still want to stick with it for few more months because otherwise i have to move huge amount of files (and about 1500 torrents in queue). i need to organize first and it will take time :-(
okay, i'm moving some huge files from my home directory. but will it free space from 'filesystem'? i don't know if 'home' is included in 'filesystem'.
nah, not nvidia. i have a amd radeon graphics card. and its a desktop.
it was working fine for a long time. and i didn't update anything recently. i'm not sure if it a hardware issue, bucause on windows, it runs completely fine.
anyway, i face this problem more while i'm using firefox. just now, i found these in the the message log file:
okay, i'm moving some huge files from my home directory. but will it free space from 'filesystem'? i don't know if 'home' is included in 'filesystem'.
with the information you provided there is no way to know or answer that
is this a default LVM ?
is /home on a different partition that / ?
where are you moving the files to ?
and is that location on a different NON full partition ?
there is no way for me to know any of that
Code:
su -
--- your root password when asked ---
df
will tell you
the "df" command will tell you how full a partition in
your / partition is this size" 8124856" that is 8 gig
9 gig is normally considered the VERY SMALLEST for fedora
and 12 to 24 gig is more of a normal size
fedora normally will default to using a LVM
you did a manual partition ( that is fine)
i normally would use 12 gig as THE MINIMUM !!! size for " /" on fedora
( my open suse install has 18 gig USED already in my "/" partition but i have 80 GIG partition )
but in the meantime
remove the OLD files in /tmp
fedora 19 defaulted to keeping 2 back up kernels and the current
but /boot is only 80 full ( but it is only a tiny 140 meg partition )
i use on fedora
/boot -- 1 gig ( but this was for the now NOT USED "pre-upgrade" ) 200 meg will do
/home -- 24 gig
SWAP -- 2 to 4 gig
/ the rest of the drive or 12 to 24 gig
If the video card works flawlessly in M$ but not in linux, it's difficult to conclude that the problem is hardware.
In relation to the firefox error message, I would google it by entering it exactly into a google search and see what it means.
In relation to the radeon driver dropouts, you could have a look at the man page for radeon and peruse the options there to see if one or more could be applied to your card. Then you could write a
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/00-myoptionsfile.conf
file and try different options to see what the result is. This has worked for me in the past, but it's a laborious process. You will need to restart the X server after each try. For that I boot into level 3 and start the X server with startx so that I don't have to reboot the machine after each try.
In relation to the full filesystem issue, you may be able to delete quite a bit from /var/log/journal and /var/tmp.

that is exactly my concern. how can this be?
anyway, thanks a lot (a very late thanks, sorry for that) for your reply.
the problem was getting more and more intense. it started to occur even when sometimes i just turned on the pc, even before starting any app. yes, sometimes it didn't come even once after running the pc for 2/3 days continuously.
finally i've moved on and installed f21 today. so far its working ok.
