Screen blank for a long time during FC3 shutdown

Hi,

My apologies if this has already been raised (I've searched on Google and the forums here, but found nothing). My FC3 installation takes ages to display what it's doing during a shutdown/reboot. The X session ends, and then it's about 10 seconds of blank screen before the text screen listing all the processes it's shutting down comes up. The trouble is, by that time most of the jobs have already been closed and scrolled off the top of the screen.

This isn't a serious problem at the moment, as my box is currently working fine, but I can imagine it might be very annoying if I started having a problem and was trying to track it down.

Has anyone experienced anything similar or know of a fix? I don't think it's a display specific issue, as I haven't had any other display problems, and moreover it happens on both my home box (which uses a GeForce 4 with the generic fc3 driver and a CRT) and my work computer (which has some kind of bizarre Intel/Dell onboard chip thing and an LCD).

Thanks!

First we need to know the complete configuration of your Linux system. Like if say it's on a network and services are running on it or it's getting it from something else. The kernel your using, etc, etc. Hardware devices, their drivers, any patches and if you have changed the services in FC3. What resolution you are running, if you have a dual-head setup what you selected when FC first installed or what you selected/changed later, if applicable.

In a terminal window, as root, edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf file and remove 'rhgb' (stands for red hat graphical boot) from the kernel line. This should solve your problem. Also, you will see everything going on during boot up, instead of the grey screen with the graphical computer screen, etc.

I also comment out the "hiddenmenu" line in grub.conf as I like it the way it used to be in Core 2.

Hi,

I'm not the original poster but I've got the same issue. I'm using Fedora Core 3 on a Dell Inspiron 510m laptop, and I'm using Gnome. When I got to Actions -> Log Off -> Shutdown the screen just goes black, sits there for 5-10 seconds and then displays all of the messages for about a second before shutting itself off. I don't think its delaying the shutdown at all - it just isn't showing the messages.

Seems to be some sort of problem switching the resolutions or something. I would blame my laptop's flatpanel if:

1) On a previous install of Fedora 3 on the same machine this didn't happen and;
2) When I press Ctl-Alt-F1 to get to a terminal prompt, it does it instantly (well, in less than a second)

Anyway - like the first poster, I don't consider this to be a life or death issue, but I'm just curious! :-)

Jamie.

Doh! I don't know how I missed Pudge's post. Sorry everyone. :-S I tried what Pudge suggested and not only did it work, it got rid of that really annoying computer image on bootup. Thanks Pudge. :-)
