Rpmsave issue with webalizer

I decided to check my web logs today with Webalizer which came prepackaged with my previous Redhat installation as well as my Fedora C2 upgrade and noticed that my site hasn't generated any web reports since July 3rd. I checked to see if apache was producing log files in my /var/log/httpd/ folder and saw that everything was normal. I then decided to run webalizer a couple of times. First time I got weird error messages pertaining to the length of some request. I deleted those lines and everything worked. But yet it wasn't updating my records. So I decided to play around with the /etc/webalizer.conf and discovered that it was using a new version of the configuration file. Therefore, it was writing the web report to a different directory. My original configuration file was saved as /etc/webalizer.conf.rpmsave. As a result, running webalizer on the current sets of log files generated only weblogs for the month of August and erased all of my previous reports for the past year! I also played around with the /var/lib/webalizer/webalizer.hist and /var/lib/webalizer/webalizer.current files which maybe the cause of this. So now I don't have historical data for my site!

The question here is, aren't all *.rpmsave files default configuration files for the updated software? I mean, I thought the installation retains the your original configuration so that everytime you decide to upgrade, you don't go around hunting for all these files to change. So frustrating.
