restoring passwd/group files

I copied the /etc/shadow, /etc/passwd and /etc/group files from another system onto my Fedora box, and now the system locks up at random. Is there a way to restore the files to the default ones, without having the originals? Is there a way to examine /etc/passwd and /etc/group for errors, to see if they are really causing the lockups?

What are /etc/passwd- and /etc/group-?

Thanks in advance

There's no way for those files to cause a machine lockup. At worst, you would not be able to log in or see services which fail to start/work.

Ordinary backup files.
