Removing software

Hi all,

I found an "unoffical" RPM that installs the flash player. The reason I used it instead of the "offical" one is because I have yet to figure out how to install anything tarredd or zipped w/o apt-get and RPM's install nicely.

ANYWAY the plugin sucks, how do I remove it? If this is too much of a weenie question, a link to a tutorial would be just as good

TIA,

Jimi_l

From the 'rpm' man page.
INSTALLING, UPGRADING, AND REMOVING PACKAGES:
rpm {-i|--install} [install-options] PACKAGE_FILE ...

rpm {-U|--upgrade} [install-options] PACKAGE_FILE ...

rpm {-F|--freshen} [install-options] PACKAGE_FILE ...

rpm {-e|--erase} [--allmatches] [--nodeps] [--noscripts]
[--notriggers] [--repackage] [--test] PACKAGE_NAME ...

So you want rpm --erase PACKAGE_NAME

There is a convenient way to read man and info pages when using KDE. Type in:
info:rpm
or
man:rpm
in either the application launcher or the konqueror address bar.

hi,

to uninstall an RPM, open a console, go root, and type:

rpm -e nameofrpm

by the way, an easy way to extract files from an archive (.tar, tgz, etc) is to simply right-click on the file name in konqueror and go to 'extract' or 'extract here' on the pop-up menu - saves having to remember commands!

I'm sure that will work BUT I recycled the RPM package and the name was about 30 characters long. The other problem I have with that is I tried installing it the hard way and apparently I could not get the syntax of the package name correct (probably because it WAS 30 characters long).

Is there a list of installed RPM's? I could then just copy the name form the list (thus ensuring it's correct syntax) and then paste it into the correct erase command.

Thanks again,

Jimi_l

If you can remember a part of the package name you can query the rpm database using:

rpm -qa | grep string

Where 'string' is a part of the package name. For example,

Code:
[root@mymachine:~] rpm -qa | grep kernel
kernel-utils-2.4-9.1.101.fedora
kernel-2.4.22-1.2190.nptl
kernel-2.4.22-1.2115.nptl
kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13
The results here are package names containing the string 'kernel'. To uninstall one of the listed packages you would do, for example:

[root@mymachine:~] rpm -e kernel-pcmcia-cs-3.1.31-13

Packages can be refered to by the characters which precede the minor version. For example, the characters 'libgimp3' is enough to refer to the libgimp package.

When installing from a downloaded rpm file, use auto-completion to get the name right, and to refer specifically to the file-name rather than the package name.
