Recent Fedora 8 update - Now no boot

Hi,

I just updated the system after being alerted about new updates. Now the system will no longer boot. I receive all the textual OK messages as everything is loaded, then a textual login appears and starts flashing until finally a message pops up saying it has not been possible to load the X-Server.

Any advice appreciated.

Thanks.

What got updated then, as in 'rpm --last|less', and what's the exact error messages or do 'egrep "(EE|WW)" /var/log/Xorg.0.log'.

What kind of video card do you have? I'm guessing it is an NVidia card or are using some other module that isn't directly supported by Fedora, and you are getting the modules from an alternate repo.

If this is the case then the problem is likely that the kernel got updated and the alternate repo hadn't pushed the modules when you updated your kernel.

You have two choices:

1) You can boot from the old kernel (pick at startup) and things should be fine. Once the alternate repo has caught up and you get the new modules, you can reboot to the new kernel.

2) You can log in and run "yum -y update". The packages should be in the repo by now.

Thanks for the replies.

UnSpawn - I'm not fully sure what got updated. The system stated there were 6 updates. One of them was the kernel 2.6.24.3-34.fc8.

Returned results from your command:

(II) Loading extension MIT-SCREEN-SAVER
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module
(EE) NVIDIA(0): ***Aborting***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
(WW) No FontPath specified. Using compiled default

forrestt - "yum -y update" resulted in "No packages marked for update". As you have probably worked out from the above, you are correct, I am using an NVidia graphics card.

Thanks.

Are you using an alternate repo to get the NVidia module rpm's? If not, log in and run the following:
Code:
wget http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-8.rpm
rpm -Uvh livna-release-8.rpm
yum -y update
This will download the rpm for the livna repo, install it, and then use it to get the NVidia module updates.

If you are already using the livna repo, then I'm not sure why it isn't working. Perhaps you just need to install it with
Code:
yum install kmod-nvidia
Once you get the livna repo working and the nvidia kernel modules installed, pup should warn you about future updates.

Thanks for your help. The install you suggested there worked and everything is back up and running again.

Hi,

I have just noticed that in my Applications -> System Tools I now have "nVidia Display Settings" and "NVIDIA X Server Settings" and both seem to load the same setup dialog. I assume the second was added after installing the above driver.

Can someone please advise which would be the original and how to remove it?

Thanks.
