quake3 and fc5 resolution issues

Just installed fedora core 5, apparantly have the nvidia drivers installed (quake runs at 125fps at 1280 x 1024 resolution) so that side of things is ok.

But whenever i run quake at a lower resolution than the desktop (1280 x 1024) it runs in a smaller window in the bottom left of the screen and nothing i can do will change it, e.g. alt + enter or /vid_restart in quake.

Was previously running slackware 10.2 and i had the same problem _rarely_ however a quick alt+enter or vid_restart fixed it first go.

Any help would be much appreciated, it has got me stumped.

Have tried it with quake 4 also, and it does exactly the same thing ... and apparantly happens with ut2004 as well?

So that leaves it where ... system setup or driver issue i'd assume.

will keep mucking around

I think it's a wine problem (read someone posted about it before, search LQ)

What's wrong with running it at that res? or changing down your desktop res?

Not ideal i know, but a quick and dirty fix

I dont use wine, quake uses pk3 (.zip) files and has a linux patch so it's a native linux game.

I can't run it 1280x1024 because it lags in big fights 800x600 or 1024x768 is most preffered, but i like my desktop at 1280x1024 though :-)

and as i said before it worked fine on slackware 10.2, so chances are it is something to do with fc5.

here are links to a console dump of quake and my xorg.conf:

ok i have figured out the problem.

in the xorg.conf the extra resolutions need to be added - /etc/X11/xorg.conf

i only had 1280x1024 in there, so naturally that's the only resolution quake (or any game) could run at.

many thanks to my brain not being able to look at the simple side of things.

Are you able to run in fullscreen? Coz the resolutions are already ther in my xorg.conf but still the games (UT2004 and Doom3) are running like before. It only works if both my desktop res and game res are the same

in the Section "Screen" part u need to add more resolution sizes, because currently for depth of 24 you only have 1280x1024, u need to make sure for both depths you have - 640x480 800x600 1024x768 and 1280x1024, and possibly some less common resolutions in between such as 960x680 (i think that's it).

This part is what you need to modify:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "Videocard0"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 24
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 16
Modes "800x600" "640x480"
EndSubSection
SubSection "Display"
Viewport 0 0
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024"
EndSubSection

I'm 95% certain that is your problem.
