Puzzling CD-ROM problems during installation Core-1
 

Greetings,

I am wondering if anyone has encountered a situation similar to the following.

First, I downloaded the ISO images from the Fedora site and used md5sum on my existing Red Hat 9 system to verify the integrity of each of the three images so I know I am starting off with good images. Next I burned each of the ISO images to disk, using cdrecord.

From here, I placed Fedora CD #1 in the drive of an older gateway computer and booted. The CD booted, install process began, and I opted to perform the media check, which promptly failed at about 1%. A bit puzzled, I put this same CD in another computer (a newer IBM celeron system), booted, and performed the media check with complete success. Further puzzled, I placed the same CD in my P4 system and tried to boot only to find that it would not even boot off the CD.

Thinking maybe something was wrong with the CD itself, I burned a second copy only to find results exactly the same as described above.

As a final test, I took my Red Hat 9 disk # 1 (created with the same burner as the Fedora CD) and found that it booted flawlessly on all my systems as well as passing the media check.

Has anyone experienced something similar to this?

Any and all feedback is welcome, even if it’s just to confirm that you have encountered the problem as well.

I have the same problem but with CD 2. I downloaded the ISO image 3 time from 3 different sites, and not one of them pass the mediacheck. I've tried the CD on 3 different machines and get the same result.

The install fails on the same file, xsri-2.1.0-9.i386.rpm.

My at a lose, I have no idea how to fix the problem.

The most problematic installation I had from RedHat was this one, the Fedora .. after reburning my CDRW few times and finally got it working when I used a slower speed. I guess you'll be able to complete the installation by burning at lower speed (tried 4x and the installation went quite well).

Got it to pass the mediacheck
 

I tried your suggestion and cd 2 now passes the mediacheck. Now to try and install it on my PC.

I found that my problem was definitely related to burn speeds, but it was that I was burning at too slow of a speed rather then too fast.

I had recently run out of a batch of CD-R media (IBM discs rated at 1-12x) that I had for about the past two years, and purchased newer media without paying too close attention to the specs for the media on the case, which clearly indicated at 48x.

Without thinking I used the same burn command previously used with the older media to produce the faulty discs mentioned in my post:

cdrecord -v -eject speed=4 dev=0,0,0 <ISO_IMAGE_NAME>

All that was necessary to produce discs that booted and passed the media check successfully in all my systems was:

cdrecord -v -eject speed=32 dev=0,0,0 <ISO_IMAGE_NAME>

(My CD-RW has max write speed of 32)

So to cut to the chase, the problem had nothing to do with Fedora and everything to do with me not paying attention to the speed I was burning at.

The one useful thing for me at least, was that I discovered two good sources of information on CD-RW, and burning:

hi,

i downloaded fedora core 1
when installing i get to the question about where the installation files are. When i choose CDrom i get:
No fedore core CD was found which matches your boot media.


Does any one know what is the problem here?

I've had the same problem as you originally described, and I simply thought my CD-ROM drive was going bad. Now, I'm gonna try and burn the CDs again at a slower speed (originally burned at 48x onto 48x media) and see how it goes...

Yep, that did it for me. I determined that my CD-ROM drive was 24x, so I burned the new CDs at 24x. Mediacheck worked, and I am typing this from my new Fedora install. Thanks!

Just a note on burn speed though. The write speed of your CD-RW is not the only factor in determining burn speed. The media itself generally has a certain rating that can drastically affect the speed at which you can successfully burn.

Being only an occasional "burner" myself, I had never paid much attention to these details until I had the problem that caused me make my originally post.

I am having the same problem with a Gateway solo 1450 laptop that has a DVD drive.

I burn the ISO at 40x or 16x still a no go.
