Problems with firefox on x86_64
Hello, I am currently using Fedora 7 and I am baffled by this issue, on previous versions of Fedora I could easily install the 32 bit version of firefox, however with this version even if I install the 32 bit it is forcing me to use 64, even after removing the 64 bit version! I guess my main question is is there a way to remove all traces of the 64bit version as it appears to not be uninstalling ? Or should I just install my own copy outisde of the distro installation? If you guys have any tips I would be greatful. Thanks!

There is a package you can install that runs firefox.x86_64 as 32-bit, eliminating the need to install 32-bit firefox to use the i386 plugins. It works great.
Code:
# yum install firefox-32 Be sure to close all instances of firefox-64 before running firefox-32. |
Weirdly enough, it is trying to force me to install two different versions:
Dependencies Resolved ============================================================================= Package Arch Version Repository Size ============================================================================= Installing: firefox-32 x86_64 0.0.1-5.fc7 fedora 4.3 k Installing for dependencies: firefox x86_64 2.0.0.5-1.fc7 updates 20 M Transaction Summary ============================================================================= Install 2 Package(s) Update 0 Package(s) Remove 0 Package(s) Total download size: 20 M Is this ok [y/N]: I am thinking that the firefox-32 should match, but even if I use a package manager it is forcing me to load these two, instead of the ones that match. Is there a good way to exclude the un needed from the repos? |
Install both. Firefox-32 is not firefox.
Firefox-32 is basically a script that runs firefox.x86_64 in 32-bit mode. Without firefox.x86_64 installed, there is nothing for the script to run. |
I did go ahead and let it install, Thank you for the help btw, but it runs and does nothing upon executing the 32 bit script, I am wondering if this is a version conflict due to my tie in with both livna and fedora repos. I have never had this issue before, from what I understand simply installing 32 bit solves the entire problem, but even after removing all firefox rpms and installing the 32 bit it seems it is still pulling 64 bit. I am using konquerer right now so at least I can browse well hehe. Sorry for not having more information, I am new to linux desktoping.

It’s probably not related to Livna.
Maybe something’s missing. Try groupinstalling the graphical internet group. Also, recent jre updates require compat-libstdc++-33, which is not installed on some systems. Code:
# yum groupinstall “Graphical Internet” |
Awesome, once I installed the group and the dependency , I installed firefox-32 and it worked perfectly! I really appreciate your help and thank you for your time!

You're welcomed. It's good to hear that everything worked out.

Another solution is nspluginwrapper which lets you use 32-bit plugins with 64-bit firefox.

Thank you!
I was having a similar problem, FC 7 and Firefox on an AMD x2. Thanks for the help!
