problems with fedora 3.6.6-1.fc16-.i686 gnome 3.2.1 startup
1)My latest fedora 16 3.6.6-1.fc16-.i686 shows the grub menu of loadable kernels followed by the moving bar display across the bottom of the screen (forget what it is called right now - maybe named after some city in the NE USA?). After that I have an underscore cursor at top left corner of screen but the Gnome 3.2.1 Log On screen never appears.
To get the system to run I tell grub to load the prior version 3.4.11 which works fine.
I suspect that if I could see what is happening with 3.6.6 while init is running I could diagnose why the system does not come up.
I suspect there is a configuration file parameter that would let me see the commands ala old fashoned Unix. Can someone lead me there?
2)I see in /boot that the file initramfs-3.6.6-1.fc16.i686.img is dated the day before I first noticed this problem

I don't recall taking any action that would change the kernel the day before I first noticed the problem. Perhaps I have a parameter set to automatically update the kernel ? I believe there is a parameter that allows automatic update; can someone point me to it in the gnome 3.2.1 commands - or at the command line - since I think I'd be better off not having the system update automatically.
I made a related posting in newbie but I was less explicit than I should have been. It is not my intent to overload the system but perhaps I should have posted here the first time. Please excuse if this is a no no.
I'm not eager to have a system that magically becomes difficult to start. I'm old - one day perhaps not long in the future I'll die - I don't expect my kids to be computer nuts to read the material that I have on my system since it includes my finances and a lot of other stuff I want available to them. I'd rather load defective kernels myself so I can deal with them myself as needed.
