problems trying option to upgrade fedore 6 to fedore 8

I've downloaded the fedora 8 dvd iso from 3 different sources, each time after I burned and boot with them, and try the upgrade option, they give an error on the media check. If I continue anyway (not recommended, but did anyway) it eventually freezes during package checking (over 1 hour of no activity).

Is there a bad version of the iso that's been distributed? Does the upgrade option not work? Something specific to my machine (no other problems that I am aware of).

Thanks,

Tony

Are you burning the dvd at max speed? If so try bumping it down to 8 or 6x, if you can stand the wait time try it at 4x. I saw this when playing with Aurora (http://auroralinux.org/) and people were having this kind of issue.

well, good and bad.

It passed the media test (burned on 4x), but still hanging up of the checking dependencies for the upgrade part from fedora 6

Any other thoughts?

Thanks,

Tony

I have never done an upgrade,, have always done a fresh install. Can a jump from 6 to 8 be done.. or do you have to step it up to 7 first? Seems like a real bit of work if that is the case...

Probably what is happening is the drive labels changed after FC6 and that is hanging things up. ALL drives (post FC6) are labeled sdX rather than hdX (for pata) and sdX(for sata). While attempting an upgrade the system gets confused as to which drive is sda (or whatever) and it hangs. The easiest (and safest) way out is to backup you important files and do a fresh install. The rumor (and that is all it is at this point) is that in F10 things will be setup in such a manner that fresh installs can be gotten rid of. It is also said that grub(which is still using the old nomenclature) will either be brought up to date or replaced.

I've had the same problem and finally I had to do a fresh install.

That is what I finally ended up doing (Fresh install). Such a shame that the upgrading didn't work. If it was the sda/hda issue, seems like that would/should be easy fix for Fedora to implement.

But Fedora's official stand on upgrades is that you should always do a fresh install. So from their point of view, why waste resources on something they advise against?
