Gee, 7.1 sound. I’ll bet that’s hot off the assembly line.
First, look at the manufacturer’s support site for linux drivers. They write the initial drivers, not the OS people.
As a point, I don’t remember a micro$oft CD included with my last motherboard. The drivers came from VIA Technologies by way of Asus for the window$ USB, sound, LAN, etc. Just like in window$, truly new/novel hardware is rarely supported in linux distributions, but support usually becomes generally available over the first 6-12 months.
If the manufacturer has no drivers (which can be sung to the tune “Yes, we have no bananas"), you are going to have to poke around the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture (ALSA) at
http://www.alsa-project.org for some drivers. It’s not as bad as it might sound, no pun intended. See if you can find your card at
http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc or try something from the list that might be close enough to work.
Also, always try to direct your purchases to hardware vendors who support linux with drivers.
