Please show us (copy + paste) the exact error messages when you encounter them, as well as the exact command you tried to use to accomplish whatever you're trying to do.
Also, please note that Fedora 9 is rather old, and it would be wise to upgrade to Fedora 12 or 13 in order that things can be more easily diagnosed by folks who are also running Fedora.

You shouldn't ordinarily have to use init, certainly not for exiting from the X server. If you want to shutdown the computer, use 'halt'. If you just want to kill the X server, use Ctrl+Alt+Backspace or 'pkill X'.
fedora 9 has been dead for a very long time
There has been NO support for 9 for the last year
please install the current version of fedora
