Problem with Compiz on flgrx-8.43-1.7.11

Hi all,
I recently installed the newest flgrx driver (as an alternative to generic radeon driver) without any problems, but
Compiz (running in X.org/Gnome) doesn't run properly. When GL Desktop in Compiz is enabled, the title bar of all windows is disappeared and the effects don't work at all, almost hanging the PC. What should I do?
info:
Fedora 8
output from rpm -qa :

kernel-2.6.23.8-63.fc8
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-8.43-1.7.11.fc8
xorg-x11-drv-fglrx-devel-8.43-1.7.11.fc8
compiz-0.6.2-3.fc8
libX11-1.1.3-4.fc8

Compiz or Compiz/Fusion? (from latest rpm - likely fusion)
How did you install the fglrx driver?
Do the decorations et al work with the free driver?

http://forum.compiz-fusion.org/showt...?t=5436&page=2
... contains some solutions. Read through it.

... openSUSE method - relevant to you, read it.

However, the proprietary fglrx drivers are well known to misbehave with compiz/fusion.
If the free drivers run your card, use them.

Thanks a lot for the quick reply, Simon Bridge

Firstly only Compiz, since it installs with F8 out of the box, and worked perfectly with the free driver. I will now try downgrading the X.org-server as in

http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showth...3&page=1&pp=10

and see if it works, and if it doesn't, I'll surely stick to the open driver.

If there's anyone who had this same problem and/or found a solution to it, please post. This should be solved.

... may I suggest you enable compiz-fusion :)

There are a lot of issues with vanilla compiz (and beryl for that matter) involving the proprietary drivers. While their are workarounds, compiz and beryl have been merged and many issues have been cleared up in the new form.

The result in prettier and more configurable than compiz, fewer options but more stable and understanible than beryl. Emerald seems to have lost some themes too.

You may need to deliberately purge the old compiz first though.

I installed compiz-fusion and it works perfectly on the free driver, but not on fglrx. So, until this issue is solved, I'll continue like this (using the free driver).

For the meantime, there's a temporary solution that I read somewhere, which says that you could keep both drivers, and switch between them in case you need fgrlx and not compiz-fusion. I tried that option, but every time i change my xorg.conf file to use the free driver, it reverts back to the one using the fglrx automatically during X startup. I think this could be because of the module for the fglrx driver still being loaded in the kernel and that somehow restores the xorg.conf file to use fglrx again. Any workaround for this?

And another thing -- every time I log out and back in, the Desktop Effects are not working, although enabled, so I have to disable/enable them again. What is this now?
