Problem caused by mixing incompatible repositories

Hi folks,

Fedora Core 3
KDE desktop

I mistakenly mixed the repositories of kde-Redhat with that of Fedora Core release server
Code:
[base]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Base
baseurl=http://download.atrpms.net /mirrors/fedoracore/$releasever/$b asearch/os

[updates-released]
name=Fedora Core $releasever - $basearch - Released Updates
baseurl=http://download.atrpms.net /mirrors/fedoracore/updates/$relea sever/$basearch

[kde-redhat-stable-all]
name=kde-redhat-stable-all
mirrorlist=http://apt.kde-redhat.o rg/apt/kde-redhat/all/stable/mirro rs
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://kde-redhat.sourcefor ge.net/gpg-pubkey-ff6382fa-3e1ab2c a
enabled=1

[kde-redhat-stable]
name=kde-redhat-stable
mirrorlist=http://apt.kde-redhat.o rg/apt/kde-redhat/fedora/$releasev er/$basearch/stable/mirrors
having upgraded

kdenetwork-3.4.0-3.1.3.kde

Which is not a package of FC3 and resulting in some KDE GUI programs not working as USER such as

KStart -> Internet -> KPPP
KStart -> System Settings -> Network
etc.

But they can work on command line on Konsole as Root. Also they can work on login KDE desktop as Root.

Is there a simple method to fix it other than REINTALL Fedora Core 3

TIA

B.R.

Copy the yum.conf below and paste it into a new text file and copy to /etc/yum.conf
It updates to kde-3.4 .

As you know which package si wreaking havoc the simplest thing to do is getting rid of it and replace it with the correct version.
The first thing you would want to do is to comment out the wrong section of your YUM/APT config file and run yum update / apt-get update.
After this uninstall kdenetwork with either apt, yum or red-carpet. As the problematic URL is no more in your config you will have no trouble reinstalling the right packages.

Hi runlevel0,

Tks for your advice.

Changed to "enabled=0" on following repositories;
Code:
[kde-redhat-stable-all]
name=kde-redhat-stable-all
mirrorlist=http://apt.kde-redhat.o* rg/apt/kde-redhat/all/stable/mirro* rs
gpgcheck=1
gpgkey=http://kde-redhat.sourcefor* ge.net/gpg-pubkey-ff6382fa-3e1ab2c* a
enabled=0

[kde-redhat-stable]
name=kde-redhat-stable
mirrorlist=http://apt.kde-redhat.o* rg/apt/kde-redhat/fedora/$releasev* er/$basearch/stable/mirrors
and deselected them on "yumex" (I'm running "yumex" (Yum Extended))

Ran
# yum check-update

and then
# yum update packages

IIRC there were 5 packages, 3 from atrpm and 2 from dag, lib packages

and then rebooted the PC.

PC started to boot
Code:
.......
........
Remounting root filesystem in Read-Wirte mode [ok]
Setting up Logical Volume Management [ok]
Checking filesystems
mounting local filesystems:  [ok]
Enabling local filesystem Quotas  [ok]
Enabling swap space
booting then hanging here

[Crtl] + [Alt] + F2/F4
not working.

[Crtl] + [Alt] + F1
Changed back to booting screen.

What I noticed during booting it detected a network card requesting for config. I configured it selecting Dynamic DNS. It returned to booting screen again and continued until it hung as mentioned above. The network card has been configured before at the time when I installed FedoraCore3. I don't understand why requesting config the second time.

Advice will be appreciated.

TIA

Hi folks,

Something strange happened here. FC3 box starts working now. The trick is;

During booting it asked for "configure NIC" which has already been configured when installing FC3. Just ignored it and let it continue to boot normally. Another warning popup saying failing to bring up eth0. Ignored it again then FC3 booted finally. The OS is now working.

I'll remove the incompatible package "kdenetwork-3.4.0-3.1.3.kde"
# rpm -qa | grep network
system-config-network-1.3.22-1
system-config-network-tui-1.3.22-1
kdenetwork-3.4.0-3.1.3.kde

with
# yum uninstall kdenetwork

and then run
# yum install kdenetwork
to see whether the problem of mixing incompatible repositories can be rectified

Remark:
I already have all working data burnt on CD and disable the repositories of;
/etc/yum.repos.d/kde-redhat-stable.repo
/etc/yum.repos.d/kde-redhat-stable-all.repo

I'll come back to the forum again.

Does the fedoratracker.org really offer this? Fedora Extras is open for quite some time already. pre-extras should not be referred to anymore.
