preupgrade 16 -> 17 fails; grub error.

Hello

I have tried to preupgrade from fedora 16 to fedora 17 (Beefy Miracle)
Stage 1 finished with;
Quote:
DEBUG /sbin/grubby --title="Upgraden naar Fedora 17 (Beefy Miracle)" --remove-kernel="/boot/upgrade/vmlinuz" --add-kernel="/boot/upgrade/vmlinuz" --initrd="/boot/upgrade/initrd.img" --args="preupgrade repo=hd::/var/cache/yum/preupgrade ks=hd:UUID=62fffe91-d64f-4448-b675-7734f2a307a4:/upgrade/ks.cfg stage2=hd:UUID=62fffe91-d64f-4448-b675-7734f2a307a4:/upgrade/squashfs.img"
After rebooting for stage 2 choosing the "Upgrade to Fedora 17" menuentry produces the following errors:
error: file not found
error: you need to load the kernel first

Fortunatly i can still boot the "old" 3.3.7-1.fc16.x86_64 kernel...
Any grub/grubby experts out here to show me the way?

TIA

Had a similar problem using preupgrade-cli

All finished. The upgrade will begin when you reboot.

I think ii is probably as I don't have /sbin/grub installed and I'm not using /dev/sda as the boot drive

Actually looks like my problem is related to this preupgrade bug:

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=800205

Seems preupgrade not passing a parameter to dracut

Thank you for your fast reaction sonik.bhoom!

I don't see these last 2 errors in the terminal because of the required reboot... Do you know what log i can find them in?
The last error here is what i quoted in my #1 and that one is indeed similar.

Neither am I...(I'm using /dev/sdc on a triple-boot Mac-Windows-Linux on their own disks)
Question; Did you manage upgrading with stage 2?
This because your second posting mentions Bug 800205 - kernel command-line without root= causes panic after running preupgrade

In my situation:
1 stage 2 of preupgrade never starts.
2 i still have all fedora 17 .rpm in /var/cache/yum/preupgrade-updates/packages/ (including the new kernel-3.4.0-1.fc17.x86_64)

hi linuxghost! were you able to upgrade to fc17?
My 3 atempts ended with the "file not found
error: you need to load the kernel first" message.
/boot/brub2/grub.cfg was modified, but that's all.
i can see the fc17 rpms in /var/cache/yum/preupgrade, but none of them were installed
best regards

Hey efxlinux.
Thank you for your reaction.
I was not (yet) able to upgrade. Could not find the time; too much work...
Looks like you have exactly the same upgrade problem!
I will try tomorrow with root="(hd*)" (*YMMV but grub gives a nice <TAB> completion).
If eventually I would succeed I'll let you know.

Your suggestion did the trick: just edited the grubby entry before booting, added "set root='(hd0, msdos1)'", and that made grub able to find the upgrades files(images and rpms).
Right now is upgrading packages.
Thanks a lot!

Exclamation

Linuxghost: Be careful: the upgrade didn't work as expected. It updated every package but the kernel
Right now I have an unbootable system.
I'm trying to find what failed, and let you know
Regards

Hey efxlinux

Too bad...
Questions; What was your kernelversion before the upgrade?
Can you boot this FC16 kernel?

I was running kernel-PAE-3.4.2-1.fc16.i686
I could recover my system and finally upgrade to fc17 in 2 stages: 1st make the system bootable again by choosing the upgrade option from a Fedora 17 DVD. Funny, but this method again failed to install the fc17 kernel. Once I was able to run a terminal, I had to run 'yum distro-sync' which downloaded and installed kernel 3.4.3-1.fc17.i686
One thing is true: in my experience, this is the worst preupgrade performance by far.
Hope it helps, but I would recommend you to download and have a Fedora DVD at hand
