Plymouth - Fedora 10 graphical boot loader

I write this thread hoping that it will be useful to someone.
if it's not useful please feel free to delete it.

by installing Fedora 10 on a few computers I came to this one conclusion:

if you have a ATI video card, Plymouth will be activated from the beginning.
If you have nvidia intel or any other video cards you will not see the nifty schmifty Plymouth's graphical boot, but instead you are presented a simple stretching line that keeps it's place.
If that simple line is not bothering you then leave it as it is.
But if you must use Plymouth (ex.: you have a die hard ms windows user friend and you need to make him eat his heart out) then do this :

as root user(or su) edit the file : /boot/grub/menu.lst

use whatever text editor suits you (ex. : midnight commander, file manager)

definitely do not edit the file : /boot/grub/grub.conf as fedora 10 is not using that file. but instead is using the menu.lst file.

in the contents of the menu.lst you need to search something similar to this :

title Fedora (2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686 ro root=UUID=13bd68c1-5bd2-4670-8de4-53b33a68d821 rhgb quiet
initrd /initrd-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686.img

you need to edit the line that starts with the word kernel and at the end of that line ad this vga=792

this will boot Plymouth at the 1024x768 resolution

after editing the line it should look like this :

title Fedora (2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686)
root (hd0,0)
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686 ro root=UUID=13bd68c1-5bd2-4670-8de4-53b33a68d821 rhgb quiet vga=031B
initrd /initrd-2.6.27.12-170.2.5.fc10.i686.img
for other resolutions try this :

Colours 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
--------+---------------------------------------------
256 | 0301 0303 0305 0307 031C
32,768 | 0310 0313 0316 0319 031D
65,536 | 0311 0314 0317 031A 031E
16.8M | 0312 0315 0318 031B 031F

For convenience, here is the same table in decimal terms

Colours 640x480 800x600 1024x768 1280x1024 1600x1200
--------+---------------------------------------------
256 | 769 771 773 775 796
32,768 | 784 787 790 793 797
65,536 | 785 788 791 794 798
16.8M | 786 789 792 795 799

for more info go to Alex Buell's page.

Go to this page to learn how to chose new themes for Plymouth or to read the same thing you read now

hopefully this will be helpful to someone.
