Pls help out! i cannot play music
i installed fedora 16 on my laptop but cannot play music with amarok and watch movie

Welcome to LQ. I think Fedora comes with no multimedia codecs preinstalled. You need to install them through Fedora's package management. IIRC it's yum.
|
For easy access to lots of media, try VLC

Hi Friend,
Thanks for you prompt response i appreciate it.i already done that.i went thru konsole, enter root prompt and installed amarok but all to no avail. my sound driver is installed. there is a message about plugins. i used the internet to download everything well updated but no solution to the problem. Pls i need further assistance on this. Thanks |
My installation of F16 has pulseaudio and that the volume is extremely low, so go to a console as try use 'alsamixer', push F6 and select the correct audio hardware.
Then you can up the volume. Use keys to move from one value to the other |
You have already done what? What message? From which application? What exactly does it say? What is "everything" that you downloaded? From which sources? Please post exactly which commands you have executed including any error messages, around [code] tags.

Add RPM fusion- http://www.fedoraspot.com/2011/11/fe...epository.html Add plugins/codecs- http://www.fedoraspot.com/2011/11/in...fedora-16.html Adding FFmpeg would be a good idea as well, and I'd probably also install flash, a DVD decoder, and maybe the K3b MP3 decoder plugin as well. It has been a few days, I'm curious as to whether the original poster found a solution to his problem. So how about it, kesphils? Did you get your sound fixed?

What do i do from here? pls help me out! |
I don't know whether this question is relevant - but how are you performing your installations? Are you using rpm or are you using yum? (or something else)

you might want to READ the fedora documents
the wiki has the instructions to BREAK USA ,UK, and a bunch of others laws in install the ( illegal in the us of a ) multimedia programs for fedora to include them would be illegal "libdvdcss" is STILL ILLEGAL IN THE US OF A and the mjmwired "quick " guide http://www.mjmwired.net/resources/mjm-fedora-f17.html you might want to install the CURRENT fedora version "fedora 17" all support for 16 will end at the end of this year |

libDVDcss _may_ be 'ilegall' in the US, but its never been tested in court. Until it is, about all you can say it that you think it would be illegal if tested. There are some exceptions as well. Quote:
As far as libDVDcss goes, the whole thing is just stupid. At least some countries realise this. As far as I know, the open source mp3 etc. decoders have never been tested in court either. Same situation as libDVDcss, though not quite as stupid. The only reason why more distros dont ship with libDVDcss and the open soruce media decoders 'out of the box' is fear of possible litigation. The chance of a private individual being charged and taken to court over libDVdcss or open soruce media decoders is (IMO anyway) virtually zero. *edit- thanks SharpyWarpy ;) |
@cascade9
Well put. My hat is off to you, sir. |
The easiest way to get the codecs you want is to install fedorautils. Just open up add/remove software and search for fedorautils in the search box. You get only one result. Check it and click apply. Once the installation is complete, run fedorautils. You will be prompted for a password and once you enter it a small popup screen comes up. Choose Essential tweaks ..... and follow the directions. Once the installation is done you should be able to play your media.
