.pl extension

This code did not work

Code:
AddHandler cgi-script .cgi .pl
when i try to run a cgi it executes
when i try to run a pl it does not work...it lists the code inside the file!!

But this did the trick

Code:
AddHandler cgi-script .pl .cgi
now when i try to run a cgi it executes
and when i try to run a pl it also executes!!!!

i'm not sure why??!!!
