path variable

does anyone know which one of the plethora of files holds the initial path. I have found many places where the path is modified but am having trouble running down the file that holds the starting path.

Thanks

/etc/login.defs has the starting definition. Look for ENV_PATH and ENV_SUPATH. Then it is further modified in /etc/profile. A user's own .profile or shell login script might also change it.

Depending on your distro and version, you may have a /sbin/initscript or /etc/initscript where an initial PATH could be set.

Sorry for the delay, but I have a strange job that can eat up a lot of my time during storm season. But thanks for the help.
