package manager gets stuck on ferdora core 6

Hi all,

I have installed it a few days ago and, in the begining all was ok.
it even recognized my sound and video card, things the CentOS didn't do. so, thumbs up for
the people in the Fedora project!!!

now, i tryed to install Realplayer (RealPlayer10GOLD.bin) using the triminal:
rpm -ivh ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin and got a Dependency problem.

went on the net and downloaded that libXXX.so.X (sadly I don't remember what is it, and i don't have it any more) and installed it also in the same method.

after that I was able to install the RealPlayer, but system updater and the Add/remove
software both get stuck in the´retrieving software information´ window.

any idea of what can be done?

You are installing the wrong file. Go to http://www.real.com/linux/, download the Redhat package (its listed under the orange download button) and install it with the rpm command. Also make sure you install the comapt-libstdc++-33 package if you install RealPlayer on Redhat based distros.
Code:
#yum install compat-libstdc++-33

Unhappy That is not the problem... the manager is the problem...

Thanks for the quick replay.

the RealPlay is installed and working, the problem is with the package manager/updater and
with the add/remove software.

UPDATE
after a long wait I get an ´unable to retrieve software information´ error message.
when I open the ´details´ window I get just the word ´None´...
also got this lines from ´.xsession-errors´:

So what happens when you login as a normal user, does the error persist?

Sorry for the delay,

Yes, it persist, and anyway, he asks for root password,

it seems that the software update is also stuck, it says that it has network problem, but
network is ok, here, I'm writing this in firfox, on the net.... so, is there any way to re-configure
or just reconfigure the network setup of the updater? there's got to be some config file, somewhere...

check for the repos conf files in /etc/ yum XXX i can't rememeber the exact location but if there's a dead link, u will wait ages for it to retrieve any info, i have all repos disabled when i don't need them.

there's a yum.repos or something like that in the /etc directory just do a ls -Fa you will see it nearly at the end of the list, go in there and you will see files with .repo extension i think from my memeory and just vi or text edit them make and enable = 0.

by default there are fedora-core.repo , fedora-updates, fedora-extras.

well, the yum.conf says that the repos should/are placed in yum.repos.d directories, and they are:
fedora-core.repo fedora-legacy.repo
fedora-development.repo fedora-updates.repo
fedora-extras-development.repo fedora-updates-testing.repo
fedora-extras.repo
..
all of the entries within these file are enable=0 except 1 in fedora-development.repo and 1 in
fedora-extras-development.repo

these are:
[development]
name=Fedora Core - Development
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/core/development/$basearch/os/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=rawhide&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgcheck=0

and

[extras-development]
name=Fedora Extras - Development Tree
#baseurl=http://download.fedora.redhat.com/pub/fedora/linux/extras/development/$basearch/
mirrorlist=http://mirrors.fedoraproject.org/mirrorlist?repo=extras-devel&arch=$basearch
enabled=1
gpgkey=file:///etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-fedora-extras
gpgcheck=1

does it help?
