Office 2000/XP install with WINE?
 

Hi,

I have been successful in Wine's installation and running of notepad. However I am having difficulties with running the Office 2000 or XP installations. The install will load and get as far as updating the windows installer, but it then fails to update it and exits.

This is the output i get:
Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

Yeah. Wine isnt made to run Office XP or 2000 or any version. Hence the reason we have a product called "OpenOffice", which is made to run it.

You'll need Netraverse's Win4Lin. It's pretty expensive but you can usually pick it up off of a p2p or buy it on E-bay.

i have seen reports that at least office 2000 or 97 works on WINE hence: http://frankscorner.org/modules.php?...rtid=20&page=1

but i am not getting any of these errors that it states

I beleive the software is called CrossoverOffice. OpenOffice is software in its own right. :p

I use Word 97 and Excel 97 with Red Hat 9 Linux. Codeweavers makes something called CrossOver Office which includes some extra enhancements for wine. It cost about $60, but does allow Office 97, Office 2000 and Office XP to to used under Linux. If you plan to also use MS Access keep in mind that only only Access 2000 will work. There is also no mention on their website about using Office 2003. It may not yet be supported. If you look on the Codeweavers website you should also notice that Office 97 and Office 2000 get a gold medal for compatability while Office XP only gets a silver medal. I am only moderatly experienced with Linux but found that installing Crossover Office first and then Installing Office 97 was very easy. I have been using Word 97 and Excell 97 under Linux for about a year now and it has worked well for me.

I also use the Textmaker wordprocessor made by Softmaker which I believe is the best word processor available for Linux. It is a full featured $50 wordprocessor which is so efficiently coded that it will start up in about 1 second when I click on the icon. I have both the Linux version and the Windows version of Textmaker. I also look forward to trying out their new spreadsheet when it becomes available. Here is their website:

Open Office/Star Office is also good, but with it I need to wait about 10 seconds for it to start up. On my old computer it would sometimes fail to start at all on the first try. For about 6 months I used the free open Open Office software to publish a newsletter for a small singles club. The monthly newsletter was in multi-column format with photos and clipart. I had previously used Word for the newsletter but soon discovered that with Open Office it was much easier to do a comlex layout with multi-columns and photos.

Thats what they invented DTP software for :p

Anyway. Thanks for your help, however being a skint student I am not into shelling out money. Its a shame that this wont run on WINE. Guess I will have to persevere with windows to use Office then. I dont like OpenOffice much as it feels cumbersome to me and as you say is slow.

This is kind of late, but it might help other people with this same problem. Frankscorner.org has some nice tutorials on how to get certain apps to run in linux. I run Office 2000 in linux myself.
