Nvidia Drivers For Fedora :)
 

sup........ just wanted to note that nvidia drivers are now available for Fedora Core 2 visit nvidia.com, any questions post em!

on FC1, I compile 2.6.7 with 4k stack support, and install this driver, it works!

It also supplies a tool named by
nvidia-settings
which is quite nice.

Tried to install the new 4-stack compatible drivers, but when I exit X-Server and (as root) run sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run, the program reponds that 'no precompiled kernel interface was found to match your kernel (2.6.6-1.435); would you like the installer to attempt to download a kernel interface for your kernel from the NVIDIA ftp site?'. I have replied "yes' and also 'no' to that question, which yields the same thing - no compatible kernel interface available. Then "gcc-version-check failed: ./usr/src/nv/conftest.sh: Line 1: cc: command not found. Could not compile gcc-version-check-c".

Next, the installer instructs me to "select YES to abort the installation, set the cc environment variable to the name of the compiler used to compile your kernel and restart installation". (the NO option is for people who know what they are doing-DEFINATELY not NEWBIE me).

So, I'd appreciate knowing what to do next; also how to enter X-server once I'm done with the installation, since I've messed things up a bit by simply re-booting instead of using the correct command. Thanks for any assist!

I am stuck at the same spot as you. I have found that you can type init 5 to log back in to the gui.

Try installing the kernel source.

Already have downladed and set them up, and I have one word for the new driver - AWESOME!

Thanks for the reply, but I need an assist on that one. The 2.6.6-1.435 was installed by FC2 as an update the first time I ran FC2. (I'm really surprised that the Fedora developers would not have coordinated this kernel with the Nvidia developers).

It isn't difficult, just download and install this rpm:

i just installed the new nvidia drivers. not a problem at all. runs great. i am running FC2 with a custom 2.6.7 kernel. it seems to be running great. the nvidia settings app is beyond helpful. those of you who have always wanted an easy way to set gamma and a lot of other setting via GUI, this is the thing for you.

Thanks, ThAeS, but when checking out the kernel source, I found that there is a new update (2.6.6-1.435.2.3) and installed that one instead, believing that this would be the one that the new Nvidia drivers were meant for. Unfortunately, with the new kernel, the shortcut to exit X-server (cont-alt-bkspace) doesn't work and puts me back to the log-in screen. I thought that typing 'init 3' in terminal mode did the same thing, but the response is 'unknown command'.

If you could help me with the proper way to exit X-server, I'll try to install the Nvidia driver with the new kernel.

telinit 3 is the command.

Man, something is really messed! I tried 'telinit 3' , 'init 3' and the terminal responds with 'command not found'. Checked it out in my SuSE distro on another machine and 'init 3' works fine. Looks like I'll have to format and start fresh, although everything EXCEPT Nvidia works like a champ. I appreciate your assists, though.

the nvidia driver said it isn't compatible with the Riva driver built in to fedora, but i it installed any way. during boot, fedora 2 loads a graphical boot program, which uses the riva driver, and causes the os to lock. I can boot to init3 and then to init5 and everything is cool, because it dosen't load the riva driver (graphical boot program).
so is there a boot option that will allow me to bypass the graphical boot program???

Are you typing 'telinit 3' as root? If not, it's likely that telinit (/sbin/telinit) is not in your path.

Yes, Growler, ran as "SU" and got 'unknown command'. Actually, I used a back door (cont/alt/F2) and logged in as root, then ran 'init 3' - response was "starting irq balance -ok, sstarting pcmcia - ok, starting automount - no mountpoints defined - ok, starting anacron - ok, starting mdmpd: Kernel md module does not support events - FAILED. However, X-server was actually exited??? Anyway, the sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-6106-pkg1.run still brings me back to the "no precompiled kernel interface" problem. So, it appears that I'm either going to have to modify this kernel (which is WAY beyond my abilities) or find install yet another kernel that is compatible, and frankly, GRUB is starting to look like a chinese menu with all these kernel options listed.
