Nvidia driver problems

I have a geforce 6600 and trying to install the driver. I was going to enter run level 3 but for some reason, i cant, it accepts the command but never allows me to the terninal. I have the driver run file and entered run level 1 to install and it says i need the kernal tree to compile. not sure if it meant the sources for fedora or some other kernal but as u can tell, i dont know too much bout linux so any help would very helpful. thanks in advance.

It will need the sources yes. Your running the init or telinit 3 as root? Otherwise it wont actually do it.
Other than that, if you are new and don't know much about linux, maybe you should pick something other than fedorah? A live distro might be a good start, or at least one with a few good gui config tools

Fedora is just as newbie friendly as any other distro I have tried. They all can have their problems getting set up.

You can use yum to install nvidia drivers if you set up the livna.org repository. http://stanton-finley.net/fedora_cor...es.html#nVidia

I've tried fedora, it's a lot less friendly than most for new users.

Computerdude? Suse 10.1 would be great for you, gui config tools for everything and a well designed installation program. If you did install it, I'd recommend using http://www.thejemreport.com/mambo/content/view/254/42/ as a guide to setting up extra sources for files and getting the video drivers working.

You could also try the latest of knoppix. It's a live cd/dvd distro that also offers to install itself to the hard drive, so it pretty much configures itself for you.

Please read the "sticky" at the top of this forum. Among other things, it explains how to get the nVidia drivers from, e.g., the livna repositories. It also explains why using the nVidia compile/install system can cause problems in your system. (Although the problems are, mostly, related to system with more then one video driver installed.)

after the init 3 press ctr-alt-F1 to go to another "terminal", then login and install the driver.

Hi.
Follow the instructions here:
-----------------------------
- download this: http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm
- then go to its folder and type as root
"rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release-5.rpm"
- after that you will have installed livna repository in your fedora
- then type "yum update kernel" as root
- then reboot and boot the new kernel(if have to be the first choice at the top of the boot menu)
- after boot loading process type this:
"yum install kmod-nvidia-$(uname -r)" as roo
- if this command fails type this: "yum install kmod-nvidia" as root
- then reboot
- voila,, you have installed nvidia driver just for a few minutes
- type "glxgears" in a console and watch the result.
if the result is something around 200 .... bad.
- if you have ~ 200 score go to console and type this: "glxinfo"
- watch for line like this : "direct rendering = yes"
- if it is "yes" you have successfule installed driver\

- if you have "yes" but still you have around 200 FPS then go to services and disable "SELinux" and reboot.

I hope this will help you.
