Noobie here...just diving into Fedora Core and have fresh installed FC5. The (Under system/administration/soundcard detection) finds
Vendor: Intel
Model: Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) AC'97 Audio Controller
Module: snd-intel8x0
However, I cannot get sound to play.
Further, I went into the alsamixer and boosted all levels that I could. I kept reading (in these forums) about different "switches" but was unsure of what was being spoken about. Of possible interest is the "external" option in alsamixer, which simply has a box that reads "00", but no "fader" or adjustment options. Any help would be *greatly* appreciated!!!!

Just to make sure when you are in the alsamixer that there is no MM at the top of the bars. If there is the channel is muted and to unmute it hit the m key when at the desired bar. Should only need main or master and pcm. See if that helps.

Sounds like one of those plaguing sound bugs in every distro of fedora since release version 1. Might be a permissions issue. I cannot remeber exactly what to change /dev/dsp to. ' chmod 600 /dev/dsp ' or something like that. It must be run as root.
When you installed it, did it play sound?
If so have you logged in as root?
When as root, run alsamixer to make volumes are up and unmuted. Then try to play sounds. If this works run the command ' alsactl store '. Log out and login as regular user and try to play a sound. If no sound then it is a permission issue and I am not sure of the difference in fc4 to fc5 to be sure.
Unfortunately, still no luck... no sound when logged in as root, although all levels in alsamixer are unmuted and turned up. There has never been sound on this machine with FC5. I really do appreciate all the help so far. Pulling my hair out...any other thoughts greatly appreciated.

I wonder if one of the IRQ's are being disabled at boot. Look through your dmseg after boot and see if there are any errors listed. If you are using the graphical booting sequence you may not see these type of issue. To see a normal boot edit your /boot/grub/grub.conf and remove the RGBH or something like that and the QUIET option. Then when you boot it will show a standard boot screen showing everthing the boot sequence is doing from the kernel to the startup scripts.
I've got the same problem altough my sound card is some kind of high def audio intel card with a "SigmaTel STAC9200" chip. Alsa Mixer for me doesn't show an external amplifier although there's something called "IEC958" that can only be muted or unmuted (no volume) and neither setting works.
lspci says the sounds card is on PCI address 00:1b.0 and the only resemblance I see in dmesg is that address which shows here (no other mention of sound in dmesg):
First of all please use CODE tag while listing such huge details thanks.
For ur sound problem, before getting into system, wat does UDEV say during initial boot after grub (when u hit enter in grub on FC5 option)
U can c msgs like Uncompressing linux .......... so n so.
when checking for UDEV it holds for a few seconds and make a very low subtle sound (i hear in my woofer)
Do u hear it?
smgregory,
I had no sound with FC5, but after the second reboot, it worked. -I was rebooting for something else, but the reboot started the sound. This may not work for you, but sometimes the simplest solutions work best. Give it a try.
