I'm using Fedora Core 3 and have this problem that has been bugging me for like a month now. Every time I log in, I have to run the sound card dection thing to get sound. It wasn't always like that. I don't know what happened but one day I turned on my computer and no sound.

I had also a problem of no sound. But i'm not sure if my solution is the right for you, actually i don't think so.
Anyway, i got no sound. But after muting some channels i found out that one channel have to be muted to get sound on FC3.

On my computer this channel is called "IEC958 Caputre Monitor".
In KMix this channel was listed as a switch.

That didn't seam to help... Anymore ideas?

I have the exact same problem. No matter which user is logged in, even root... I have to run sound card detection for the sound to work...

I installed FC3 a few months ago, sound always worked, then about 2 weeks ago the sound quit.
I have since reinstalled FC3 with same problem.

Not a very helpful answer, but I think I'm a bit closer! ;-) I've got exactly the same problem with exactly the same soundcard and am running it on a Dell Inspiron 510m.

I think its something to do with the volume of the PCM channel. If you try running "aumix" from the command line before running the soundcard detection tool, the volume of the first PCM channel is zero. If you run it again after the soundcard detection tool, the PCM is turned up. So I think that its not to do with the soundcard drivers, but the volume of this PCM channel. It just so happens that the soundcard detection tool turns this volume up before playing the sample sound.

This same problem, but on the second PCM channel (PCM2), causes my headphone port not to work until I manually go into aumix and turn it up.

I've tried using the Save function on aumix but it doesn't seem to save, even when logged in as root. I guess if someone could figure how out how to save this setting, then our problems might be solved. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the alsamixer command line tool? Just a suggestion, but that seems to do a fairly good job of saving settings.

Hi! That seemed to work! Just to summarise what I did:

1) Logged in to the command prompt as root by opening a terminal window and using 'su'
2) Ran 'aumix', and changed my PCM channel so the volume was turned up
3) Ran '/usr/sbin/alsactl store 0' to save my new volume settings
4) Opened '/etc/rs.local' with nano and added the line 'alsactl restore 0' to the bottom of this file. Saved.

I've since rebooted my PC and the volume remains on, and the soundcard works fine.

I still can not get this to work. every time I log in I have to either run alsamixer or aumix to turn the sound back up.
I tried doing:
That didnt work. The system still doesnt save the settings.
The command 'alsactl power 0' gives me:
"Power state for card #0 is D0"
Im guessing that this is my sound card number because 'alsactl power 1"
gives me "alsactl: show_power:1214: snd_ctl_open error: No such file or directory"

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your post , I also had a sound problem and all I needed to do was run aumix and turn up all the volumes.

Erm... it was useful, but now I can't seem to adjust the sound settings?

That almost worked for me... When I move the mike volume I start to hear what must be the spoken version of binary. You know, beeps, squeals and the like (oh my!). But no sound other than that. What can I do, or where can I go to get help? And, uh, I'm pretty dumb, so, please try to keep it simple for me, I'm a major newbie.

You are not turning up the mike on the output side are you? If so that can create some horrible feedback, also make sure that the mike is not to clost to the speakers, as some older models are unsheilded and can also provide feedback. As a basic rule run aumix, or alsamixer and select only PCM and MASTER, turn both up about 2/3 or 3/4(if you are using the alsamixier program, check that it is not muted as designated by the MM at the top), don't want to blow anything out. Then test a wav mp3 or what have you. If all is well, store with "/usr/sbin/aslactl store 0". Then move on to your cd drive and what have you. Hope this helps a little bit.
