Question no sound card-sound through cdrom?

After installing fedora core 2, i opened XMMS, and played a cd. i had my headphones in the headphone jack, and i listened to my cd. i decided to rip it, but then i couldnt listen to it with the headphone jack on my cdrom. since my soundcard is not detected(its an onbord dell) i was wondering if there was anyway to route my sound through my cdrom drive.

any help would be appreciated.

If I understand you correctly, you want to use your CD-Rom drive as a soundcard? This is not possible (afaik) due to the CD-Rom drive not accepting audio input. It seems odd to me that no-one considered that possibility when they designed CD-Roms, since they would already have digital-analog conversion hardware and you could just send it a 44.1Khz bitstream, but that's the way it is. Perhaps this would have made the device far too complicated? Have to ask an EE
