NIC trouble

Hi. Im new to Fedora and Im having problems connecting to
the internet through my cable modem through my NIC. Ive
searched for past posts on this subject, cant find any information
concerning this above RH 7.

Im almost certain the NIC is the problem. The NICs model is
3com Etherlink III ISA (3c509/3c509b)

Ive tried "insmod 3c509 io 0300-0306", "insmod 3c509 irq 5",
"insmod 3c509 io 0300-0306 irq 5"(i know these settings are correct, I got them from Device Manager in 2K)

Then "ifconfig eth0 up". The cable modem seems to respond now,
but I have a new set of problems. First, I can no longer ping localhost.
Second, dhclient refuses offered IP addresses, telling me it
needs some kind of script for the NIC.

This NIC works fine under both Windows 2000 and Mandrake 9.1

Any ideas? Thanks in advace.

Update. I can ping localhost. But it still tells me that the NIC
needs a configuration script to operate correctly.

Anyone??? PLEASE???

Louis - I just went through the same problem your having a week or so back and the problem is the 3com cards. Here's a link to the thread if you want to take a look at it:
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...hreadid=173931
I tried the 3c509 the 3c590 and the 3c905B-TX - none of them would work with Fedore Core. The minute I put a Linksys card in my network started working.....I've had issues with other 3com cards in the past under other distributions of Linux as well. You may be able to get it to work but the frustration of having to screw with it wasn't worth it to me....

My recommendation : If you're sold on Linux, don't use any network cards made by 3com......

Do not abandon 3com. There is a solution.

This is a known issue concerning kudzu and 3com cards. It is a simple fix. Just disable kudzu in the termnial. Type...

chkconfig kudzu off

then restart. Th 3com card should be able to function correctly then. it isnt linux and com it is kudzu and 3com that are causing issues. There are more detailed explanaions as for twhy the card can not function on fedora's bugzilla site but I didnt understand them when i looked at em anyway.
