newest kernel and fedora core 1
 

i have upgraded the fedora core kernel for the latest released by fedora using yum update
and now some of my programs are not working,

is that normal that it happened?

1) what shall i do next time to avoid that and what shall i do to repare it now?

i find also the newest stable kernel released on the kernel.org
it is neewer than the one of the fedora upgrade,

2) shall i upgrade my kernel to the neewest kernel or stick to the fedora upgrades?

I'm running FC1 aswell, and this is my kernel version.
That's what you're running, I assume?

I didn't have any problems after upgrading to it, except a small problem with WINE. What problems are you experiencing?

As for your 2nd question, I believe all the security fixes in the lastest 2.4 kernel were backported to the RedHat/FC kernel, so upgrading to improve security isn't nescessary. You can upgrade if you want, but it's not absolutely nescessary.

it is Linux 2.4.22-1.2149.nptl
and what does not work is the adsl connection that i had some problems setting it up
so actually what i am doing now is despite that i have upgraded i still use Linux 2.4.22-1.2115.nptl

i ask about newer 2.6 kernels 'cos someone told me that by upgrading to the 2.6 kernel he fixed his sound problem that i also have ...

A 2.6 kernel would probably be worth the upgrade, as long as all your hardware supports it. I assumed you were talking about a newer 2.4 kernel, but a 2.6 kernel would definitely be worth the upgrade if you're willing to go through the hassle of setting one up.

2.6 Kernel
 

The 2.6 Kernel is a fine upgrade, but it is not pain free. I have upgraded 3 systems, and on each there is some funny business with Kudzu and Network cards (3com and Intel) as well as sound card issues (ESS-Maestro, C-Media, and SB-Live!). I am having to fidget quite a bit with some of the settings to get it wokring smoothly.
