newer kernel won't start

I have Fed 12, running on kernel 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686 I have newer kernels installed, but they will not boot into X.

The updater installed the kernel 2.6.32.21-166.fc12.i686. I can boot into runlevel 3. But if I then give the command startx, I almost get an x-window, I can see the top and bottom, ermm, wadjecallems, beams, but the screen is blank, and then the machine freezes. I can only switch off.

Can anyone help me get newer kernels started? Where should I look for problems?

it sounds like you did not install the driver for your nvidia or ATI card

-- the most common reason ---
what is your 3d card ?
and how was the driver installed
-- nvidia --
i take it you did not use the fedora provided kmod-nvidia or the better akmod-nvidia
and did not black list the nouveau driver
-- ati --
you did not use the ati driver that came with fedora ( fglrx) ?

What is the error reported in the log " var/log/xorg.log " or the boot.log

Card is GeForce 9200

I used to use the nvidia driver, but now nouveau is working, so I have left it alone. It works fine with this kernel. The only error I have in the xorg.log.old is:

AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
(II) AIGLX: reverting to software rendering

The xorg.log would be from this boot, which is the older kernel, and works fine.

Can I look elsewhere for error messages?

well if x is not starting that error says it all
" (/usr/lib/dri/nouveau_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)"
the nouveau driver is not there
reinstall it

and look in the xorg.conf ( if there is one ) /etc/x11/
fedora no longer make one by default
ans see if "nouveau" is listed as the driver
