new FC9 installation - multiple problems
 

Ok, I installed FC9 on an old laptop p3 and I have been having a lot of problems with it. At first it wouldn't let me log in as root, so I had to log in from the prompt. I tried to just add a user with "useradd" command so I could actually log in but there were a million problems once gnome fired up. Most of the programs would give me some error message and almost everything didn't work. I couldn't even log in as the user I created and use the "su" command. At this point I wanted a GUI as root so I tried /sbin/init 3 and startx, which worked but still most programs wouldn't run in gnome. I would get an "Unknown error:" with Authentication, Network, SELinux Management, Services, Users and Groups. I would get an "unknown return code 0" when trying Add/Remove Software. Almost everything doesn't work. Also I haven't installed drivers for the wireless card so that makes things difficult.

I was wondering if these errors have anything to do with me manually adding a user. I suspect that it isn't the problem. Would it be worth it to downgrade to FC8? Also I hate gnome, I wish it would let me pick KDE from the login screen. Does anyone have any ideas as to what the problem is? Thanks in advance.

If you have download the gnome version and install the gnome version ,it is possible to download kde desktop
As you do not mention exactly what you,re problems are it is some what difficult to give a good answer.
Both FC8 and FC9 can run smoothly but I get less problems with FC8 I run them both
On the other hand considering that you,re laptop is older it might be possible that older version works better

Ok, stupid question time... I am having problems finding an Fedora Core 8 i386 KDE dvd iso, all the ones I have found are livecds. Anyone know a good place to get one?

1st the core was dropped after FC6. So you have FC1,FC2,FC3,FC4,FC5,FC6,F7,F8,F9 and F10(under development).


The live cd is the only straight kde install there is. You can get the regular DVD and install kde in addition to gnome(default).

How much memory does this computer have? What graphics chipset? While I am not a fan of F9, I do not think the version is the problem here.

Its an old P3 laptop with 512MB ram, and the screen is busted so I have been plugging it in to my HDTV. Are you saying that you can install F8 with the kde livecd?

I know the problem isn't with F9, I was just hoping a new F8 installation would fix the problems.

Yes, you can install from the livecds. I actually prefer this method becuase there are always so many updates in the first few weeks. Why download the packages on the dvd if you are just going to download their replacements on the first update.

Did you try and update your previous F8 install to F9? A clean install is almost always the best (safest) method.

How is your computer hooked to the HDTV? It MAY (depending on how it is hooked up) require the proprietary driver to do this.

512mb is enough to get by, as long as your video chipset is not soaking up too much of it.

Yeah I will be doing a clean install. The laptop is hooked up by standard VGA cable. Is a pentium 3 considered i686? I didn't see any F8 kde livecds that were i386.

Yes, PIII are considered i686. I THINK the split is Pentiums are i586, and PII(and above) are i686.

As long as you are just using VGA (no adapters), that should not be the problem.

Bad decision WRT searches, I think. Search Google/others on "F8". Then search on "FC8".

That tells me I should just continue to use FC8 as a term regardless.
