Networking freezes when attempting ftp/http download

I am running Fedora Core 1 on an IBM Netvista with an integrated Ethernet card. I am having problems with downloads. The network stops working during downloads, and the only way to get it up and running again is to deactivate the card (using redhat-config-network) and then re-activate it. I mainly notice this when downloading large files (I was trying to download Knoppix, tried different links too). This happens regardless of the browser I'm using (tried standard Mozilla and Firefox). Also tried using wget and still had same problem. Any ideas as to what is causing the problem?

Since I have no idea what your network situation is here is my shot in the dark. Where I work we have to change the MTU setting on ethernet cards from 1500 to 1350. To do that type the following in a console as root with your network card up and running:

ifconfig eth? mtu 1350

Where ? is the # of your network card, which ifconfig shows you.

I have this same problem on redhat 9 at my current apartment complex. It works fine if I bring it other places. It's very frustrating. I tried changing the MTU to 1350 but that didn't work. Any help would be much appreciated.
