Unhappy -- network problem --

i have a problem with my network configuration in linux
My IP settings are as follows :
IP address : 10.0.166.51 (static)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.192
Gateway : 10.0.153.1
DNS:203.122.63.152 ; 203.122.63.154

but these settings do not work for me in linux....i cannot ping the
server...earlier when i was using SuSE i changed my gateway from
10.0.153.1 to 10.0.166.1 (trial & error) & it used to work...i tried
the same thing over here...but it doesnt work..my earlier IP
address/subnet was 172.16.19.100/255.255.0.0 (i was then shifted to
this new network so had to change the settings)...so just to check
whether my ethernet is installed properly..i reverted back to my old
settings & i could ping the server...then why arent my new settings
working?
my new IP settings work fine in windows...but i have no clue
whats wrong with it in fedora...can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

The [default] gateway has to be on the same 'network' (IP subnet) as your IP address. With an IP address of 10.0.166.51 and a Subnet Mask of 255.255.255.192 your subnet includes IP addresses in the range of (if I did my math right) 10.0.166.1 to 10.0.166.62 so your default gateway has to be in this range or you will not be able to get networking working outside your IP subnet. Since routers are typically assigned the first IP address in their subnet, 10.0.166.1 is a good guess.

What this means is that whoever subnetted your network and assigned you these addresses either did it wrong or gave you incorrect information. Those settings shouldn't 'work in windows' either, so it's likely that the settings are different there or windows tries to correct the mistake and changes something to make it work?

but then i did mention that during some trial & errors i could get my internet to work
sometimes it pings 10.0.166.1...sometimes it doesnt..what could be wrong??the net works fine in windows...besides, windows will auto-detect settings only when the relevant option is checked...so i have no clue wots wrong...
also 1 more thing...whenever i get the server to ping...when i try to login though my client i get Segmentation Fault....how to rectify this prob?

Thanks in advance.

Posting the results of:
In Windows when 10.0.166.51 is the only IP address:
Code:
c:\> route print
In Linux under the same setup:
Code:
user@linuxbox:~$ /sbin/route -e
Might help clear up what it is that windows is changing so you can set up Linux properly and hopefully fix the segmentation faults in the login client.
