need guidance to install gnome 2.18 with subversion
I am running centos 4.4 with gnome 2.8 (came with centos).
Finally I decided to upgrade gnome to 2.18. But found
CVS method no longer works since they have migrated to
subversion (svn). I cannot find a detailed instruction
guiding me to install gnome 2.18 from tarballs with svn.
The instruction of jhbuild method is based on CVS which
does not help me at all.
Are you saying I can build these tarballs one by one?
I mean, I download all the tarballs, then build one after
another. Is this doable? What if there is some dependency
issue? Say package A depends on B, and B depends on A as well.
Yeah, build each package, one after another. It takes awhile, but lots of people do it that way. Follow the instructions in the link I gave you. GNOME will build properly if you follow the order provided. Any dependencies are listed in the instructions. Only the required dependencies are, well, required. You probably already have most satisfied.
If you find a circular dependency where A is REQUIRED for B and B is REQUIRED for A, then there's a problem that has probably already benn reported to the GNOME developers. On the other hand, you may find OPTIONAL packages that set up circular dependencies. These can s*ck because you have to build one of the packages twice.

I have read the instructions, it seems that the configuration is based on
bash shell. But I use tcsh all the time. I know I can modify bash script but this is
prone to mistakes from my side. So, is it okay to build from bash shell and then
go back to tcsh to work once gnome is all set?
