Nautilus behavior

I'm liking FC2... That is I like it now that I have my XP booting up and I didn't lose anything at all.

I don't like the file browser, however..... I HATE it when the file browser opens a new window everytime I open a new folder. It create too much clutter and then I have to close 20 windows when it could've been more like 3. I can't figure out where to change this functionality.... Can anybody help? Also a lesser problem is the information pane that was on the left hand side of my filebrowser window. I'd like it back if possible. Am I just overlooking these options somewhere or can I not do anything about it?

Well, instead of opening Nautilus directly try using right click on the drive or folder you want to explore and choosing Browse Folder. Nautilus will open it's true browser window which looks a little like Konqueror and it doesn't load other windows.

Sweet. Now how do I get that to be the default action when I double click? That's exactly the way I want the window to display. Thanks for that much!

Ok, I found it......

go to the fedora menu (start menu) then to System Tools and to Configuration Editor

Once in there go to apps > nautilus > preferences. Put a check next to always_use_browser

Then it works like it used to.

Cool, I've been looking for this too. Someone suggested to try to get Konqueror working instead of Nautilus, but I wasn't completely sure how.

May be you can edit the shortcut/menu to point to "nautilus --browser" instead. You can also use shift+double click to close the parent window and open the new one.

I've figured out why they call it "spatial" in the new Nautilus.

When all them damn windows open up, there is quite a bit of desktop "space you'll" miss.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I was really surprised Fedora did it like that. Microsoft used that default functionality with NT4. In the 4 series of OSes they've released since then they didn't do that. Too many complaints maybe? Makes the desktop too cluttered? Who knows, but MS figured it out. But of course the new Nautilus does have advantages in certain cirucumstances and there are people who do like it.

PS. Nice little play on words... I just now got it.... Sad, I know. Maybe I just need to get more sleep.

Yeah, I thought I was pretty clever on that word play. Too bad I'm not clever on anything that pays. :-)

It's not just a Fedora thing- that's the way Nautilus is for Gnome 2.6. I've read all the reasoning why they did that- in a nutshell it's supposed to make for easier navigation for new users- but I just don't see it. I understand the Gnome developers mission to have a simple, easy to use interface. But this seemed like one of those ideas that was just to clever for their own good. Each folder is it's own window (according to the Gnome site) and there are multipe ways of using the child/parent relationship, and modified clicks to do different things. I don't see how all that simplifies it for a new user. All they see is lots of windows.

If they wanted an easy to navigate metaphor, what's wrong with the type of thing that this message board uses:

LinuxQuestions.org > Forums > Linux - Distributions > Fedora > Nautilus behavior

Makes sense to me......

You see just where you are, and can click on any level of the chain.

They actually do something similar to that in the "file open" menus in nautilus. There are little boxes that go left to right with the directory names in the boxes as you open them up. That would be nice if they'd incorperate that into their normal browser. But I guess that's what the directory tree is for.....

I guess I knew that Gnome was the one responsible for that. I always tend to think problems lie with the distro releaser even if I should know better. Maybe its from reading too many reviews where the reviewer always blamer the distro and not the original software maker.

I do the same thing. I was making a list of things I did not like, and most were not Fedora specific as best I can tell.

I really liked Fedora 1. I switched from Mandrake after 3 years of use I liked it so much. FC2 is kinda disappointing in many ways. Some Gnome related, some FC2 related. I guess I ought to give it a few days.
