mp3 support in non-root linux account

well i have downloaded and installed XMMS in the root account, and it plays mp3s just fine. however when i get into my user account, it shows me the legality issue about not being able to play mp3s. then i ran the command su -c xmms, which got me playing mp3s, but i had to keep the kernel open, and as soon as i shut it down, it stopped playing.

please guide me regarding creating a launcher which will automatically run the su command so tat i can play mp3s in the user account. also if u can explain to me why this is happening, i'd be greatly obliged(using fedora core 3)

this is a software issue, not a kernel issue.

(you need to post your question in the fedora forum, each distro has it's own share of mp3 problems, and their solutions are all different from distro to distro.)

I think he meant terminal, not kernel
(dont know if this was moved since, but it is in the fedora forum)

Anyway it's odd that only root can use it, i would use yum to get xmms-mp3 or whatever it's called (
Code:
yum search xmms
then use yum to install
Code:
yum install <package>
if not then check the permissions in the xmms folder with
Code:
ls -l
may turn up something useful (maybe theres files in the root ~/.xmms that aren't in your users.

you can create a launcher by making a desktop icon or tasbar applet and putting that command in the right field, or make an alias for xmms to be that command, or a shell script, there are quite a few ways
