Mounting a remote mount point

I had this unresolved issue a while ago that has resurfaced.
I am running 2 machines with FC5 witht he hostnames main_pc and laptop.
There is 160G fat hdd on main_pc mounted to /mnt/family_stuff. The drive is hdb1.
I have been trying to mount that drive on laptop
with zero success.
I have tried smb, cifs, and nfs.

mount -t cifs //main_pc/family_stuff /home/snt/family
Code:
retrying with upper case share name
mount error 6 = No such device or address
Refer to the mount.cifs(8) manual page (e.g.man mount.cifs)
It absolutely exists.

mount -t nfs main_pc:family_stuff /home/snt/family
Code:
mount: main_pc:family_stuff failed, reason given by server: Permission denied
Even though ALL permissions are correct. This has been checked multiple times.

mount //main_pc/movies /home/snt/family
Code:
mount: unknown filesystem type 'smbfs'
when I have samba installed and working properly as I can get to shares from my windows' boxes.

If I do smb://main_pc/ in konqueror, I see the shares, but when I click on them, I get
Code:
The file or folder smb://main_pc/FAMILY_STUFF does not exist.
I read somewhere that cifs doesn't like to mount directories. If that is the case, how do I mount a remote media:/hbd1?
Other then that, I am at a loss.

Is it as simple as a firewall issue? Try shutting down iptables at both ends once.

Also, try using the explicit ip addresses.

And for nfs, be sure the nfs service is running and that /etc/exports is properly configured.

I have done all of that repeatedly.

/etc/export
Code:
/home/snt/ *(rw,async,all_squash)
/mnt/family_stuff *(rw,async,all_squash)
I can mount /home/snt without any problems.
