modem help

linux support for internal PCI modems and winmodems is getting better, but until you are familiar with it, my suggestion is to go with an external serial hdwr modem. Actiontech or BestData. I have setup both and can tell you that it is possible to spend several WEEKS getting an internal PCI modem to work.

1. Make sure your ISP plays nice with linux - some don't
2. Go DSL if possible
3. If not...... go to your local thrift store and purchase an external serial modem (NOT USB!) Almost any modem will work as long as it connects via serial port. Even older 34k modems will work and in most cases are more stable over older phone lines than newer v92 modems.

Here are the advantages:

a. No drivers required
b. They can be had for $5 or less
c. they can actually be faster than some internal PCI modems
d. I have installed and used both - ext ser modems are WAY easier to setup and use and give better data transfer rates.
e. If you MUST have an internal PCI look harware based modems such as the USRobotics 5610 ($65) or google for the AMIGO AMI56 with Intel 536ep chipset ($12), but the drivers on the included CD are for 2.4.x kernel only. There are also winmodems that are linux supported, but..............

good luck!

"Trio3b"

thanks for ur tips but i doubt that they will materealize here in India
coz the external modems are not for 5$ but for around 25$ and internet modems come for around 8$

with the mentioned PCI winmodem ,if we could google a bit for any help we can get a lot of help, that surely wil be like demanding more from a newbie

using a External modem is being on the safe side which is absolutely fine!

regards

PCTel modem drivers are available here:

http://linmodems.technion.ac.il/pcte...x/welcome.html

I recommend the latest, "pctel-0.9.7-9-rht-4.tar.gz", which provides support for 2.6 kernels.

Good luck,
Jeff Trull
