rjwood, I can't figure out where your mplayer is coming from. According to your output, your mplayer is version:
Code:
MPlayer SVN-r31016-4.4.1 (C) 2000-2010 MPlayer Team
But I am running Ubuntu 10.04 and the version of mplayer from the repo is:
Code:
MPlayer SVN-r1.0~rc3+svn20090426-4.4.3 (C) 2000-2009 MPlayer Team
Not only are the versions different, but the version format is different. Your version, wherever it came from, is missing several video output drivers.
Let's try this. Tell me the output of this command:
The problem I was having with playing video with sound turned out to be that mplayer hadn't been compiled with faad support. I recompiled and now I've got sound. The reason gameday audio worked is that that was just an mpeg stream, which is handled differently.
You guys are quick today.
I just noticed something. Condensed games are an rtmp url. Have they always been this way? My recently re-built (two or three weeks ago) version of mplayer plays this stream without rtmpdump.
Back from quick test. It looks like condensed games are now rtmp urls which means more recent mplayer has some rtmp support. Still not enough to do away with rtmpdump for the secured content (live and archived games) but enough for the unsecured condensed game.
Do an "svn up" on your mplayer sources (or check out the latest mplayer from svn using the instructions in the REQUIREMENTS document if you don't have mplayer source from svn.) Then rebuild making sure you have all your favorite video and audio output drivers from the last page of the configure output.
I'll have to investigate just how much rtmp mplayer now supports.
I can tell you where the mplayer came from. It came from the link daftcat provided in the 'requirement' file for mlbviewer.
Yes, but that will simply download the current source tree to your computer. It won't compile it, create a binary, and install it. Even if you did compile and install it, once you do the purge, it should remove any trace of mplayer from your system. Doing the apt-get install should install the version from the Ubuntu repository. As you can see from the filename in your apt archive, you have the package for the same version of mplayer I have. I can't imagine why doing a 'apt-get install mplayer' wouldn't install the current version from the repo.
I'm pretty sure I have a catch in there to copy your video_player to top_plays_player if top_plays_player is not in config but I never know with that code these days.
Still no luck on the condensed games. I'm pretty sure you do have that catch in there, though, since top plays was working before I made that change.
I'm right there with you. I was able to watch a condensed game in Flash, but as my laptop does much, much better with Mplayer, I'd love to help getting this working. Any testing, etcetera I can do?

See this post a few replies up. Busy day in the forums.
It looks like they changed condensed games to use rtmp and recent mplayer has very basic rtmp support. Since I rebuilt mplayer in the last few weeks, I must have picked that up without realizing it until now.
Short answer: download or update to current mplayer source and re-compile.
Theophile, can you test yesterday's condensed games with your distro default mplayer before I make this a standard recommendation to all?

Hey I tested with the distro release mplayer and it was not working... svn version works fine.
edit: ubuntu 9.10 installed through synaptic was the distro version i had installed
There is no sound in the condensed games right?? If there is, than it's not working for me...

Tell me which game you test with when you get no sound. There was sound in my condensed games but it sounds like you need faad built in your mplayer for that to work.
When I get home later tonight, I'll see if I can dumpstream a condensed game so I can analyze the audio/video.
Thanks for confirming distro mplayer.
EDIT: Royals-Tigers game from yesterday has sound. Confirmed on iPhone. Pretty sure I also had sound on Linux at home.

I think you're right... sound works on my macbook, where I used a guide I found to build mplayer from git, but not my linux box, compiled like you suggested in "requirements-2009"...
any clue how to do that? I'm guessing that nexdef will require faad to have sound too?
edit: ooookay so I'm not too clever... I hadn't switched the -ao device in my top_plays_player to spdif, so I didn't hear anything. Now that I fixed that, it's working just fine!

Ah, I see (the version in pkgsrc is indeed from October).
