Minimum memory requirement ?

Hi all,

I am right now using Redhat 9.0 i planned to switch over to fedora core. I am having 128 MB DDR RAM .

I came to know that Minimum requirement for fedora core is 192 MB for GUI , but my friend told even it is possible to install it in 128 MB .
Is it so ?.
if it possible means then how will be the speed of the system ? .

Thanks

Probably possible but you GUI will be really slow. You might want to look at another distro like Ubuntu where are memory requirements are not as intensive.

Or

You can install a different desktop or GUI.

Yes, it is possible......see;

http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/releas...rchSpecificx86
http://fedora.redhat.com/docs/releas...-hardware-reqs
(section 4.3. Memory Requirements)

Your GUI (Gnome or KDE) session will be slow, but then you can always use a different one like xfce4 (part of the FC4/5 extras). Other then that you speed may be a bit faster, with the new kernel and so on.

I once installed Fedora Core 3 on a machine with 128mb with GNOME. It worked fine, but the gui got sluggish if I opened up too many apps at the same time.

Look here; http://www.fedoralegacy.org/ download/install yum and learn how to use it. Then do something like (as root or equivalent of course);

yum update
yum install xffm\* xfwm4\* xfce\* xfdesktop
