Lightbulb Make Terminal listen on Com Port?

I have searched for other threads that would help me do this but nothing has worked yet. All I want to do is make a Fedora Core 6 terminal listen on one of its Com Ports (like Com1 or Com2) so that I can see log messages coming from a device hooked up to that com port. This can be done in Windows with hyperterminal or tera terminal. So what is the Fedora equivalent?

Ok I have found out that my OS (Fedora Core 6) contains minicom under /usr/bin. I typed the command: ./minicom -s and went through the Serial port setup. Now the device that will be connected to COM1 on my PC needs 9600bps, 8 data bits, no party, 1 stop bit, no flow control. I set all of this up in minicom and I do get output from the device but it does not come out correctly. Instead of the output showing this:

Bootup sequence started....

I get something like this:

B
o
o
t
u
p

s
e
q
u
e
n
c
e

s
t
a
r
t
e
d
.
.
.

How do I fix this? I didn't see any obvious setup option.
