I'm also trying to do the same. I'm truly a newbie in the unix world.
In my own situation, my unix box is going through a router.
So in essence, I've assigned a private IP to it so I know when it sends or received email there may be routing requirements perhaps but I'm no expert in networking - any feedback appreciated on this.
To summarize:
1 unix box for mail server
1 unix box for apache server
3 other machines that are windows XP
- Want to use my windows machine to retrieve my mail from the mail server.
Let's say my unix mail server ip is 192.168.0.25 and my apache server is 192.168.0.80 for argument sake in this situation. And all other pc's are DHCP'd to be assigned addresses over 100 (e.g. 192.168.0.101 etc...). I have FC3 installed and using a DLINK router in my home. let's say that I want my host name to be something like
www.fcnewbies.com as an example for this situation.
I've heard sendmail can leave you open potentially in being used to send spam so I was thinking that postfix might be better to use. So if I was to use postfix, how would I use it to succesfully use my system as a mail server? What do I need to do or setup to make postfix work? Has anyone managed to do it and if so, what did you do to make it work?
In addition, is there anything else that needs to be done in addition to setting up postfix to make the mail server work.
Thanks in advance for any ideas or suggestions or the steps I need to make this all work.
