lost sound after installing KDE

I have a motherboard with nVidia nforce2 chipset. After installing FC3 with gnome sound worked perfect (without installing the nvidia drivers). After installing KDE however, sound is gone. When I start XMMS I get the following message:

Code:
Couldn't open audio

Please check that your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct plugin selected
No other program is blocking your soundcard
As far as I know soundcard is configured properly, unless KDE messed it up.

I've tried changing the plugin, but without success

I don't know that any other program might be using my soundcard.

Can I get sound back without installing the nforce drivers. If I need to (or had better) install them, can anyone point me to an easy howto?

Stupid, Stupid, Stupid !!!

The above error message only applies to aRTS. When I use any other plugin (ALSA, OSS) I get no warning message, but I still couldn't hear any sound.... untill I realised the speakers weren't getting electricity

Still, what's the advantage of installing the nforce drivers if everything works fine without them?

It is because the sound volume is muted. I don't know why, but my FC3 came stock with the cd player volume muted, and most of the other stuff was muted

like that guy in the previous post: unmute the options using 'Applications > Sound and Video" > Volume.
