is there any way i can get the side mouse buttons to work on my logitech mx500?
i want to be able able to assign specific key strokes to the mouse buttons so i can use them in mohaa thru cedega
You will probably have to make changes to your X config. In the past the middle mouse button (Or scroll button did not work in linux by default and you needed to make changes to your X config.)

You could consider complaining to Logitech for not offering drivers for Linux?
true logitech should provide drivers but they ain't gonna! but we aint talking about a complicated bit of equipment a mouse with more than 2 buttons isn't exactly exotic hardware is it! a basic device should be automatically work with out spending multiple hr's of trial and error configuration surely?
They most certainly won't bother writing drivers if no-one complains. I agree that it should be much easier to get a basic piece of hardware like a mouse working, but the primary responsibility lies with the manufacturer. They release Windows versions of their drivers, so there is no reason they can't release Linux ones too. I honestly think you should tell them so - it might not fix the immediate problem, but the more recognition they have of a need to produce Linux drivers, the more likely it is they will be released in future.
In relation to solving the problem yourself, have you tried this page? It seems to be saying that the process isn't easy, but it is doable. As you say you've already spent a fair bit of time trying to get this working, you may have already seen it, but thought I'd offer the link anyway. The guy who wrote it discusses mapping keys to the extra buttons, which is what you say you want to do.
