Pitty that I found this after doing a fresh new install of Fedora 8.
Could have saved me a lot of time.

The login problems with Fedora 8 were caused by Freenx.
I had placed a file 'freenx.conf' to '/etc/ld.so.conf.d' which had '/usr/lib/nx' in it and than run /sbin/ldconfig.
This was needed because otherwise Freenx crashed after the connection was made and the authentication took place.
But after running ldconfig the problems with the login screen started.
After removing the freenx.conf file and running '/sbin/ldconfig' again the login problem went away.
