Login Screen Resolution - FC6

I recently installed FC6 on a home-built computer (AMD Athlon 2600, 1 GB memory, NVidia M?400 card, KDS VS-19 monitor). FC6 thoughtfully uses the maximum available resolution of the components as a default. The default in this case is 1600 x 1280, I believe.

Unfortunately, my eyes work best with about 1152 x 864. I have successfully set the screen to the resolution in the root and each of the user accounts on my machine, but have been unable to get the login screen to resize.

I have used both su/administrator and my root account to change the display settings for the login screen through the respective GUI apps in both KDE and GNOME. They don't 'stick.'

I have restarted the X server. I have rebooted directly from the root account, without returning to the login screen first. The screen continues to default to the 1600 x 1280 resolution.

I have examined xorg.conf and xorg.conf.backup with diff after I've made the changes through the GUI and the files are identical.

Any ideas on how to make my settings stick? (Preferably with the GUI, since those even newer than myself would probably tend to use it.) Also, I hesitate to hand massage a file that is further massaged with something like Anaconda on boot.

I've had Linux installed on my home lan since RH 5, and this is the first time I've encountered this type of problem.

Thanks in advance for the help to an old newb.

try calling system-config-display from a terminal session with a parameter of --reconfig. It cured a problem for me where I couldn't get a change of monitor type to stick

Cleanup in xorg.config

As root edit /etc/X11/xorg.config

Find "Display"

Under "Modes" delete everything larger than the size you want to use.

Save.

Should be fixed when you log out.

Here is an example of the subsection content that you should have in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Code:
Section "Screen"
	Identifier "Screen0"
	Device "Videocard0"
	Monitor "Monitor0"
	DefaultDepth 24
	SubSection "Display"
		Viewport 0 0
		Depth 24
		Modes "1152x864"
	EndSubSection
EndSection
