local hosts configuration

How do u configure linux so that when I type www.mysite.com it points to 192.168.0.2

only managed http://ste.com/

add it to /etc/hosts.

ah ok now it works. Basically what am trying to do is a wildcard dns. for exmaple
http://steven.ste.com points to http://www.ste.com/index.php?user-steven with rewrite and apache2 but when I type steven.ste.com it changes www.ste.com why? it's supposed to be dynamic by the way so each user of my site gets their own subdomain if u like.
