i recently discovered that my AA1 has more power than she shows at first sight. i did some basic Command lines in the Terminal, got myself an upgraded Firefox3, desktop appearances, themes etc.
but last night since, i could not access my FILE SYSTEM from the desktop menu. i could only open files through apps like Browser, and change the apps opening them in order to see what i want.... it's tonnes of trouble!
also, my browser remains firefox2 on occasion that i open it through the right-click desktop menu. why's that?
so is the VLC, upon successful installation, it's still nowhere to be found.
My Aspire One comes with a pre-installed distro. i believe it's Fedora.
I'm totally new to this toy and i'm not a native speaker so i'm not sure if i'm saying everything right. forgive me should i make a fool of myself in front of you experts. =]

please offer me help if someone knows what's the solution...

Which desktop environment are you using? KDE, Gnome and XFCE have an icon ("application launcher") on a panel that opens up the system menu to launch programs. Are you missing the panel, the launcher or are you using a different desktop environment. On Fedora Core, the default desktop is Gnome, and the panel to launch menu items is on the top by mistake. The first three or four items on the left hand side should give you menus of programs. On KDE, the panel is located on the bottom by default and the launcher is located on the lefthand side.

If you have the panel but not the launcher, you can add it by right-clicking on the panel and adding an "application launcher".

Some packages don't have corresponding entries in the desktop menu. A package installing a service most likely wouldn't. Sometimes there is a wizard to configure the service instead. Sometimes a separate package may help administer it (e.g. mysql). For VLC you should have an item in the launcher menu. It may be described generically by your distro or desktop (e.g. video player).

If you enter "rpm -ql vlc | grep 'bin/'" you should be able to locate the executable. You could launch it by pressing the [Alt]-F2 keys (at the same time) and entering "vlc" in the run dialog. You can also add a "Launcher" icon on the desktop with this information.

There may be separate vlc packages, such as vlc, vlc-gnome, vlc-qt. If there is a vlc-gnome package available, that one may install a vlc entry in the application menu.

I don't know if your computer actually uses fedora. If it does, look for the file /etc/fedora-release.

it seems that my netbook does not have the launcher menu you've mentioned above. when i right-click on the panel (which is initially at the bottom), nothing comes out. perhaps i'm not using fedora!? but i've read (online) that all aspire one uses fedora. Um... anyway, when i enter "vlc" (without quotes) in the run dialog, nothing comes out.
the Operating System is "Linpus Linux Lite", found in the "system" window.
