Kernel Source

Hey, I'm sorry if this sounds really stupid to some of you, but I'm trying to learn .

I'm trying to install a VPN client on Fedora and I got to unpacking it and running the installer, but half threw the installer it asks me for the dir for the kernel source.... I've tryed everything that I could read about and think of .... I'm about to go crazy lol! If anyone could help it would very appreciated.

Thanks.

www.kernel.org

or use your federa cd's to grab the kernel source off of them ...
i've never used fedora before, so i don't know what gui tool
it uses (or where it is) for install rpms .. but you always have
have the command line, or just simply a viewer such as
konqueror, nautilus, gentoo, etc ... and just navigate the cd
and find it that way. ..

the kernel source files should be on the 3rd CD and named 'kernel-source-2.6.5-1.358.i386.rpm' once installed, you'll find them in under the
/usr/src/

directory tree. they should be be in a directory called 'linux-2.6.5-1.358'. the easiest way to install them would be to click on start -> System Settings -> add/remove applications and check the development tools and also kernel development under the development heading. By the way the kernel numbers are for the FC2 distro, if your using FC1 you might have a different kernel number, but all else should be equal.

Hmmmm... I have FC 2, and I got to downloading the source, same filename and everything. I try to install it threw the cmd line and it says it's already installed. So I've tryed /urs/src but no luck.... Could it be the installer I'm using is to old to support FC 2 and can't recognize it's kernel?

If that's it , I'll cry lol.

hi

like i say the easiest way to install them is through the add/remove programs utility. try the following from the command line
rpm -qa | fgrep kernel

amongst other things you should see a file named
kernel-source-2.6.*

where the * is the version number. if it there run find or locate to find out which directory it's in. if it's not there go to the source rpm directory and issue, as root
rpm -ivh name_of_source.rpm
this should install the source files for you. just a note, i'm a begginner too, but this is how i installed my source files. good luck

Hey,

I think I found something out! I got a new VPN installer and it recognizes my kernel source.... BUT! It can't module it right... I think... It can't compile whatever it's doing. If you guys have any ideas , it would be great but I think all I have to do is to wait until cisco makes a new VPN client for FC2.

Thanks
