kernel questions regarding Fedora Core 1's up2date

as we all know in redhat fedora there is up2date icon and we can check for updates

what about kernel updates?

i know it installs the new kernel so that u can choose from the grub with kernel to choose

i tried this up2date and installed the latest kernel

but when i boot into the new kernel the sound doesnt work

when i click on the volume icon, mesg appears that there is no sound device etc.

and when i click on the details of the errors it says .. check if the kernel has sound support ...

can anyone tell me the exact steps to enable sound support in the kernel updates i get?

Mmmh... are you using ALSA as sound driver? If so, you will have to upgrade kernel ALSA modules as well (or recompile them to your new kernel config).

i have a similar problem from updating to the .2135 kernel.

i just installed kernel-module-alsa-1.0.0-0.rc2.1.fr_2.4.22_1.2135.nptl.i686.rpm but stil no sound.

The only way I have ben able to get sound to work, is to edit /etc/modules.conf and remove the line for my sound card, then reboot and run the redhat 'soundcard detection' program from the gnome menu.
I have to do all of that every time i reboot :/

nexx_au: this can't be right. With very few exceptions, reboots in Linux are only necessary when a new kernel has been installed.

Could you please post here the contents of your /etc/modules.conf file? Please post it right after a reboot (i.e. before running the soundcard detection app) as well as after your card has been successfully configured. Also please post the output of the command 'rpm -ql kernel-module-alsa'

i'll add the aumix commands to my startup script
